A good homemade margarita? It seems like when I go out to eat, the margaritas (generally) taste so good-but when I try to replicate it at home, I just can't do it. I've tried sweet and sour mix from the store, but it all tastes so syrupy and too sweet. I like them on the rocks and one with a good flavor where you can taste the tequila, but it's not just overwhelming with a liquor taste. How can I make it taste like a restaurant just served it to me???
I had this same issue and you are in luck because I did a lot of experimentation before I came up with what I think is a really good margarita at home.
ice
shaker
High ball glass
shaker
lime wedges
salt
2 shots El Jimador Blanco tequilla
1/2 shot Cointreau or triple sec
3 shots Finest Call Margarita mix
1. Place ice in salt rimmed glass.
2. Put tequila, Cointreau and margarita mix in a shaker with ice and shake 20-30 times (no more or less).
3. Strain into glass.
4. Garnish with lime wedge.
The key here is to use finest call margarita mix and make sure it is margarita mix and not sweet and sour.
Also, use a quality Blanco tequila as this gives the margarita a very clean taste. I use El Jimador because it is good quality and won't bust the bank at around $18 or so for a decent sized bottle. Repasado and especially Anejo tequilas might give you too much of a "smoky" taste you do not want. Stick with something Blanco and at least a "decent" quality. Ultra cheap tequila will ruin the flavor! Finally if your budget can not afford Cointreau (very costly!) then triple sec works almost as well.
I hope this helps, after a lot of trial and error I found the above to be just as good if not better than restaurants.
